Question Number 7: How do Americans treat the characters? (Specifically those born/raised in US)
Quote: None in particular.

Explanation/Response: The reason I don’t have a particular quote for this question is because different Americans treat Frank McCourt different ways. For example, Mike Small treat Frank with respect and like him. Other characters in the story that were raised in America (witch the book did not specify, I’m basing this on an assumption) treated Frank like an average everyday Irish citizen. Some were racist. Some though he had a funny accent. Others treated him like everyone else. The significance of how he is treated is important because it tell weather or not Americans were racist.

Character Judgment: I think these people that discriminate against Frank is sad. Then again they do live in the 1950’s when racism is high. I am glade to see though that not all are racist, and treat Frank like a normal human being, especially because he is one.

Question 1: Do you think Frank McCourt is discriminated by Americans because of his race?

Question Number 6: How do the characters maintain their cultural ties to their homeland while living in America?
Quote: None in particular

Explanation/Response: I do not have a quote for this question either because no one quote can describe how he keeps his cultural ties. Frank McCourt certainly maintains cultural ties to Ireland. He goes to Irish dances quite often. When he is at the dances, he comes with a friend. He get very nervous about asking an Irish girl to dance, and tends to be pessimistic about the whole thing. The dance usually last only a few minute, after which Frank ends it with a klutzy mistake. Irish dances aren’t the only way he maintains cultural ties. He also goes to Irish pubs often. He generally is invited or invites one of his friend to come. They then talk about their jobs, women, and how they stick with their own kind. The last cultural tie he shares is he mostly spends his social time with other Irishmen. Everyone in New York say you should stay with your own race. I find it quite racist.

Character Judgment: I think it is despicable that Frank goes to the pub after all the bad incident in his life with other people and alcohol. The Priest, who completely went mad after the drink, and his own father, who abandoned his own family because of it. I also think it is good of him to go to these Irish dances considering he doesn’t do much else socially, even though he makes many klutzy dance moves.

Question 2: Do you think that Frank make a good effort to maintain his cultural background, or do you think in the future he will completely lose it?
